Nuno Felted Scarf with Mariya Gerhardt

In this workshop students will learn how to make nuno felted scarf with shibori elements with wet felting technique using fine merino wool roving, silk gauze fabric, and viscose fiber, wool nepps. This class is beginner friendly. Wet felting is the process when hot water and soap are applied to layers of wool fiber, while repeated agitation and compression causes the fibers to hook together or weave together into a single piece of fabric. Felt from wool is considered to be the oldest known textile. Nuno felting is the process of bonds loose fiber (usually sheep’s wool fiber) into a sheer fabric, such as silk gauze, creating a lightweight felt. “Nuno” is a Japanese word for cloth or fabric. In this workshop students will learn the basic of nuno felting, felting together different fiber and fabric and learn how to make shibori in felting – binding or wrapping the felt or nuno felt before shrinking and have volumetric colorful elements. In the end of class each student will have unique nuno felted scarf.
Workshop fee: $60
Beginner level, no previous experience required
Materials fee: $20, includes fine merino wool, hand dyed piece of silk gauze fabric approx. 50” by 17”, viscose fiber, wool nepps, plastic gloves, thin plastic cover, handouts
Students to bring: old towel, scissors, plastic bag to take wet towel and scarf home
