General Information
Location: Indoor Arena in the Farm Bureau Building (Located near the dairy barn and fiber arts building)
Entry Submission Times: Saturday 9am- 1pm.
Time of Judging: 1:30 pm on Saturday.
Judges: To Be Determined.
Overview/objective:
6 members of a team will take a washed fleece and spin it, ply it, then weave it into a shawl in 4 hours.
Team and Shawl Requirements
- Membership
A team will be composed of 5 spinners and 1 weaver. It is up to the team to designate a team plyer. Members may be of any age. Minors must have a parent/guardian present for the duration of the competition. Parent/guardian does not need to be a team member.
Typically there is:
•One designated weaver
•One designated plyer
•Four spinners
*The plyer may also spin singles if they see fit.
*All members may card or flick the fleece. - Shawl Requirements
•Both warp and weft must be spun by members of the team.
•The warp must be completed and on the loom prior to the competition start.
•The weft must be spun entirely during the 4 hours provided for competition.
•The shawl must be finished within 4 hours, including fringe. Any finishing method may be used.
•The shawl must be within the appropriate measurements:
•Width: 20 to 24 inches
Length: 74 to 76 inches excluding fringe - Fiber Content and Dyes
•The content of the warp AND weft should be 100% sheep’s wool
•The WARP may be dyed any colors using any dyeing methods
•The WEFT must be spun from a washed or unwashed, UNDYED fleece
•Spinners can use hand cards or flickers to prepare the fleece during the competition. (no drum carders)
•The fleece should be skirted prior to the competition
Additional Information
What to Bring
•A pre-warped loom using hand spun wool yarn, warp weights, warping tools, shuttles, a rug to place under the loom
•Cards, combs, slickers, etc
•5 spinning wheels or drop spindles plus a rug to place under the wheel
•A basket to hold your extra bobbins
•Lazy kate, ball winder, bobbin winder, measuring tape, scissors, etc F – Fine
Facilities
•Enclosed arena
•No climate control
•Concrete floor (used to show 4H animals)
•No outlet access (no e-spinners)
•Typically no restroom access – port-o-lets will be outside
Breaks
Members may take breaks as needed throughout the event, such as visiting the restroom. However, time will NOT stop.
Judging
•There will be two judges who will evaluate the shawls based on a set criteria.
•Examples of the criteria are as follows:
•Consistency
•Tension
•Method
•Style
•Wear-ability
•Appropriate use of fibers, dyes, and patterns
•Shawl meets appropriate measurements
•Shawl is complete in the time given
Entry Fees
Each team will submit a $60 fee to enter the contest
Prizes
•First, d place ribbons will be awarded to the top three teams. Each member will receive a ribbon.
•Shawls will be auctioned off and the money will be given to each team
